My grandma always said, “Home is where your heart is.” A house is only a home when you feel in your heart, a sense of belonging, love, security, comfort, safety, and warmth. Our home is our sanctuary, it is where we can be our 100% self, do whatever we want, whenever we want.
Home can be the place where we grow up, or where we were born. For some, home represents our country, our town, or a place where we spend time with families and friends. Home provides the foundation of nurturing for our soul, it gives us the space for us to develop into fully productive human beings, while safeguarding our physical, emotional, social and financial well-being.
Whether you live in a multimillion-dollar mansion, a seaside hut, a mountain-top temple, a country farm, a college dormitory, a small condo, a bunker bed-sized apartment, or an assisted living facility, it is home as long as you are living with the ones you love and those who love you back.
Of course, you can view your home, in this case, your house, as a valuable asset. In this day and age, many people don’t just live and play in their homes, they work and even run an entire business out of their homes. Some homes are equipped with a sophisticated work office, a fitness center, a surround-sound theater, a sports court, a professional chef’s kitchen, an entertainment center, a boat house, a helipad, a hanger, an olympic-sized pool, a hospital bed, elevators, and other special amenities. With the advent of the internet and mobile phones, Google and Amazon, our home needs and wants can be fulfilled quickly without us even stepping outside of our house. It just seems like we could live our entire lives indoor if we so choose.
As homes become more like “flex spaces” or flexible assets and workplaces, where we bank, shop, socialize, school, doctor, network, do business and even build an enterprise through the click of a mouse via digital platforms, even the bedroom has become an income-earning asset. Technology has made it possible for us to bring the entire world into our home, with everything at our fingertips.
The big question is, does this make us happy? Some say that we no longer own the privacy of our home, as there are connected devices everywhere that collect data about every move we make. Even our thoughts and preferences are often monitored digitally. Businesses and advertising companies are taking advantage of this in the name of serving us better.
The truth is, there is no looking back. Smart technology and the internet of things are here to stay. We all love to be special, unique and possess secrets of our own. That’s just part of being human. We also strive to be in control. That’s just the power of being human. We are all gifted with remarkable brains capable of adapting. The bottom line is we can make our own choices. Instead of being overwhelmed, we can use technology to automate tedious tasks in our homes, work and businesses, thus making our home a place for creative pursuits such as art, gardening, science, music, sports and more time for families and friends.
Engaging in meaningful work can evoke a sense of home, as can walking along the beach with someone you love. Satisfying activities make us feel at home, at ease with the flow, in a landscape and environment that is familiar and up-lifting.
